To better understand sugar diabetes we have to know our food better. Food gives nutrition to the body and supply almost everything for growth, repair and functioning. All nutrients are divided into three main food groups or macronutrients.

Protein do not directly rise blood sugar level, with the exemption of some dairy products and legumes. But in absence of insulin, the body will break proteins down for energy. What is fat? Fats are the major component of such foods as butter, oils, margerine, peanut butter, most gravies and salad dressing. Fats are providers of essential building blocks for growtrh and development of achild. All fats are divided between three categories: monounsaturated fats, polyunsaturated fats and saturated fats. It is wise to limit the fat consumption not only for people with sugar diabetes but for everybody. Maintaining normal blood fat level is important for cardiovascular system and helps to avoid heart attack or stroke, sugar diabetes or not.

Our main attention concerning sugar diabetes disease dedicated to carbohydrates, or carbs. Carbohydrates play major role in ups and downs of the blood sugar level. For people with sugar diabetes and especially for children with sugar diabetes, it is important to understand carbohydrates. Most of carbohydrates can be found in starches. During digestion starches are break up to become sugar which goes directly into the bloodstream. Starchy foods are: pasta, rice, whole grains, whole bread, potatoes, corn, cereals, cookies, crackers, etc. Fruits and vegetables also provide carbohydrates aplenty, think of: squash, carrots, parsnip, turnip, melon, watermelon, all fruits and berries, even tomato. Dairy products are good source of carbohydrates as well as proteins an dfats. You can build whole meal menu around dairy products!

Most worrysome products loaded with carbs are sugars. Refined sugar is exactly what it is – sugar. No micronutrients or any healthy benefits, just sweet taste and a headache for diabetes management. Try to avoid white sugar at all cosst. Honey is a very good sweetener and a very-very healthy choice. Jams, jellies, all soft drinks are loaded with sugar.

There are two types of carbohydrates – simple and complex. Simple carbs are made of single or paired sugar molecules that are rapidly broken down by the body to provide blood sugar very fast. Simple carbs include sucrose (white sugar), fructose (raw fruits), and lactose (dairy produucts).

Complex carbs take much longer to digest. Complex carbs don’t give immediate spike in the blood glucose level. They are mostly starches.

People with sugar diabetes can add sugar and foods with added sugar (as almost everythung on the supermarket shelves) with caution and self-control. LKeep sugar and sugary food intake low, no more than 5 to 10 percent of your daily calorie intake.
