The thiazolidinediones is a new class of drugs for type 2 diabetes management and treatment different from sulfonylureas or metformin class. The thiazolidinediones class have two drugs in it. It is rosiglitazone (brand name Avandia) and pioglitazone (brand name Actos). Glitazones make muscle cells more sensitive to insulin. Because of that effect people with type 2 diabetes who also take insulin may be able to reduce insulin dose. Extra benefits from the rosiglitazone and pioglitazone are lower triglyceride levels and increased high-density lipoprotein (HDL, which is known as good cholesterol) cholesterol levels.
